February 10th, 2012 | No comments yetSea Rabbit: Part 9 (2011-2012) posted a photo: The Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus americanus) is a close relative of the sea lion, which was once a prolific species seen in Coney Island. “Coney Island” literally means “wild rabbit island” in Dutch (originally Conyne Eylandt, or Konijneneiland in modern Dutch spelling) and it was named after this wild rabbit of the sea in the 17th century. The sea rabbit was also referred to as mermaid rabbit, merrabbit, rabbit fish or seal rabbit in the natural history books.
